Keyontae Johnson threw down an alley-oop dunk with 25 seconds left as No. 13 Kansas State defended its home court and defeated No. 2 Kansas 83-82 in overtime Tuesday night in Manhattan, Kan.
Kansas had won seven straight and 15 of the last 16 in the series.
Kansas State (16-2, 5-1 Big 12) was led by Johnson and Desi Sills with 24 points each. Nae’Qwan Tomlin added 15. Markquis Nowell was held to a season-low four points, but he had seven assists, including one very important one to Johnson for the game-winner.
Kansas (16-2, 5-1) was led by Jalen Wilson, who scored a career-high 38 points, including eight in overtime. K.J. Adams had 17 and Gradey Dick added 16.
After Dick’s two free throws gave Kansas a 70-69 lead with 2:08 left in regulation, Sills made one of two to tie it. Nowell stole the ball deep in the KU lane and went end-to-end for a layup and a 72-70 lead with 1:14 left. Wilson tied it again with a pair from the stripe with 57.5 left.
After a scrum for a loose ball with 23.8 left, Kansas set up for the last shot, but lost control. Johnson raced down the court for a contested layup and the game went into overtime.
Wilson hit a 3-pointer with 2:24 left in overtime to give Kansas a two-point lead. Dick became the third Kansas starter to foul out with 1:31 left and Johnson tied it with two free throws.
Wilson’s two freebies with 1:18 left put KU up two, and Johnson trimmed it to 82-81 with one of his own. Nowell then found Johnson for the winning alley-oop dunk.
After the first half in which both teams shot 50 percent or better, the second half was more of a defensive struggle. Neither team shot better than 33 percent in the second half.
K-State extended its five-point halftime lead to seven, but Wilson’s field goal with a foot on the line trimmed the K-State lead to 57-56. His two free throws with 8:40 left gave Kansas its first lead since 6-4.
K-State regained the lead and went into the final media timeout up 67-65 before Dick’s two free throws tied it at 67-all with 3:10 left.
Johnson hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight of the first 12 points for the Wildcats. Kansas State used an early 12-2 run to jump out to a 16-6 lead. A layup by Johnson at the 11:01 mark extended the lead to 24-12 and caused Kansas coach Bill Self to call his second timeout of the half.
K-State took a 44-39 lead into the locker room after Kansas trimmed the deficit from 14 to just two points on a couple of occasions late in the half.
Johnson finished with 12 points in the half, but Sills led the Wildcats with 14. Adams led Kansas with 15 at the break. Wilson added 12.
