Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the team said Saturday.

Mathurin is slated to undergo surgery in Los Angeles next week. The Pacers said Mathurin is expected to be fully recovered before the start of the 2024-25 season.

Mathurin was injured during Tuesday’s 137-120 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

He missed Thursday’s 113-111 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves due to the injury. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle was hoping Mathurin’s absence would be short term, but Saturday’s announcement of the diagnosis ended the 21-year-old’s season.

The loss of Mathurin is a big blow for the Pacers, who are battling for a top-six playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The second-year pro is averaging 14.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 59 games (19 starts) this season. Mathurin was MVP of last month’s Rising Stars game associated with All-Star weekend.

Mathurin averaged 16.7 points and 4.1 rebounds in 78 games (17 starts) as a rookie in 2022-23. He was the No. 6 overall selection out of Arizona in the 2022 draft.
