San Diego FC acquired defender Leo Duru on loan from Blackburn Rovers FC on Wednesday.

The club said there is a permanent purchase option available as part of the deal with the EFL Championship team.

Duru, 20, has appeared in three matches for Blackburn’s top-flight team. He played for Barrow of EPL League Two this season and had one goal in eight appearances (seven matches).

“We’re happy to welcome Leo to San Diego,” San Diego FC sporting director Tyler Heaps said in a news release. “He’s a player we have been monitoring for many months and is a defender with exceptional physical attributes that can also play further forward.

“We look forward to supporting his development and seeing him continue to grow in his professional journey with SDFC.”

Duru also has played in four matches for the United States U-20 squad and has one assist.

San Diego FC are enjoying one of the top expansion seasons in MLS history. San Diego (16-7-4) is tied with FC Cincinnati with most points (52).

San Diego hosts the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.
