San Diego FC signed defender Christopher McVey to a contract extension through 2027 with an option for 2028.

The 28-year-old Swede joined San Diego last December after MLS stints with D.C. United and Inter Miami CF.

McVey has two goals in 20 MLS matches this season. He has four goals in 97 career matches (92 starts) with Miami (2022-23), D.C. United (2024) and San Diego.

“Chris has been a cornerstone of our defense since day one,” sporting director Tyler Heaps said in a news release on Wednesday. “His consistency and presence on the back line have been instrumental to our early success. We’re thrilled to sign him to a contract extension and look forward to his continued contributions to San Diego FC.”

San Diego currently leads the Western Conference with 39 points (12-5-3), one point ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
