Carles Gil scored one goal and set up another as the New England Revolution snapped a nine-match winless streak by topping D.C. United 2-0 Saturday in Foxborough, Mass.
Matt Turner made a successful return for New England (7-11-7, 28 points), making four saves as the Revs also snapped an eight-game winless streak at home.
Turner, who was the MLS goalkeeper of the year for New England in 2021, is on loan from French club Olympique Lyonnais. He played the last three seasons in Europe after departing in 2022 for Premier League powerhouse Arsenal.
It was the 23rd clean sheet for Turner in 103 games with the Revolution.
The loss added to the woes for D.C. United (4-15-7, 19 points), which extended its streak of matches without a win to nine in the MLS and 10 in all competitions.
After a scoreless first half in which it put no shots on goal, New England got both of its tallies in an eight-minute span of the second half.
In the 62nd minute, unmarked Leonardo Campana scored from the right edge of the 6-yard box, heading a shot into the top left corner off a feed from the right flank by Gil.
It was the fifth goal this season for Campana and his sixth in seven career matches against D.C.
In the next three minutes, D.C. responded with its two best chances of the match. After a New England turnover, Gabriel Pirani got free at the top of the penalty box but fired wide right.
Less than a minute later, Turner made his best save of the night — diving to his right to stop a shot by Jared Stroud.
In the 70th minute, Gil scored from the top of the box to make it 2-0. He froze D.C. keeper Kim Joon-Hong (one save) with a right-footed blast from the top of the penalty box.
Gil, who was the MLS most valuable player in 2021, leads the Revolution with nine goals and eight assists.
It was the first start for Joon-Hong in an MLS match since April 6.
