Toronto FC is acquiring defender Carlos Salcedo of Mexico in a transfer, The Athletic reported Friday.

Salcedo will arrive from Liga MX side Tigres UANL in an exchange that would send Toronto midfielder Yeferson Soteldo to the Liga MX club, per the report.

Salcedo previously played in the MLS with Real Salt Lake from 2013-14. He has been with Tigres since 2019 after stints in the German Bundesliga (Eintracht Frankfurt), Italy’s Serie A (Fiorentina) and with his hometown club — Chivas — in Guadalajara, Mexico.

He has also earned 48 caps with Mexico’s national team.

Salcedo, 28, would take over Soteldo’s designated player slot with Toronto. A centerback, he would likely anchor Toronto’s backline.

Soteldo, 24, of Venezuela, recorded three goals and 10 assists in 24 matches (19 starts) in his only season with Toronto in 2021.

With a 6-10-18 mark in 2021, Toronto FC finished near the bottom of the Eastern Conference table in MLS last season.
