The Colorado Rapids will name Matt Wells, an assistant with Tottenham of the English Premier League, as its next head coach, The Athletic reported Friday.

Wells, 37, would become one of the youngest MLS head coaches and would replace Chris Armas, who parted ways with the Rapids in October after two seasons.

The Rapids went 11-15-8 in the 2025 season and finished 11th in the Western Conference to miss out on a playoff spot. During Armas’ first season as head coach, the club went 15-14-5 and finished seventh in the West before falling in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Colorado finished in third place of the 2024 Leagues Cup tournament.

Wells never has been a head coach but has experience as an assistant coach in Europe with Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge as well as with Tottenham in his native England.
