Minnesota United promoted Cameron Knowles on Monday to replace the departing Eric Ramsay as head coach.

Knowles is a veteran member of Minnesota’s technical staff and briefly served as interim coach ahead of Ramsay’s arrival in March 2024.

Ramsay was appointed head coach of West Bromwich Albion of England’s second-tier Championship on Sunday. He led Minnesota to consecutive MLS Cup quarterfinal appearances in 2024 and 2025.

Knowles transitioned to assist Ramsay after winning twice and securing a draw in his three matches as interim boss in 2024.

“Cameron is the right leader for this moment in our club’s journey,” Minnesota chief soccer officer and sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad said.

“He has grown with this organization, understands our players, our culture and our standards and has consistently demonstrated the ability to develop people, build strong teams and compete at a high level. We believe in Cameron, we believe in this squad and we are excited about the future we are building together.”

A 43-year-old New Zealand native, Knowles joined Minnesota as a video analyst in 2021 and proceeded to coach MNUFC2, the Loons’ reserve team.

Knowles previously coached in the Portland Timbers’ organization for nine seasons and enjoyed an eight-year pro career as a defender with Chicago Fire Premier, Real Salt Lake, Portland and the Montreal Impact. He played college soccer at Akron.

“I would like to thank (Minnesota owner Bill) McGuire, (CEO) Shari Ballard and Khaled El-Ahmad for the incredible opportunity to lead this team,” Knowles said. “Minnesota United is a fantastic organization with a strong group of players and a loyal following. I hope to build on the success the club has achieved over the years.”
