Los Angeles FC picked up the 2022 option on the contract of star striker Carlos Vela.

The 32-year-old Vela struggled with injuries last season and had just five goals in 20 matches (15 starts). He has played in just 27 regular-season games over the past two seasons while scoring nine total goals.

Vela made an MLS-high $6.3 million in 2021.

Vela was MLS MVP in 2019 when he set a single-season record of 34 goals. He also had 15 assists that season.

Overall, Vela had 57 goals and 35 assists in 86 matches (76 starts) in four seasons with LAFC.

Vela also stars for the Mexico national team.

LAFC also picked up options on midfielders Eduard Atuesta and Bryce Duke, defender Sebastian Ibeagha and forward Danny Musovski.

The club is still looking for a new coach after parting ways with Bob Bradley at the end of the season. LAFC (12-13-9, 45 points) missed out on the playoffs and finished ninth in the Western Conference.
