The last-place San Jose Earthquakes parted ways with second-year head coach Luchi Gonzalez on Monday.

The Quakes (3-14-2, 11 points) are 0-6-1 in their last seven matches including Saturday’s 6-2 loss to Los Angeles FC.

San Jose has conceded the most goals (51) and has the worst goal-differential in MLS (minus-22).

“We want to thank Luchi for his hard work, commitment to the club and professionalism,” San Jose general manager Chris Leitch said in a release. “Luchi and his staff have worked extremely hard the past year and a half, but we have not met expectations this year as a club. We felt that we needed to make a change, and it was in the best interests of the club to move in a different direction.”

Assistant coach Ian Russell was named interim head coach and assistants Steve Ralston, Luciano Fusco and Adin Brown were retained.

Gonzalez, 43, compiled a 13-24-16 record since joining the club ahead of the 2023 season. San Jose finished ninth in the Western Conference last season and made the playoffs as a wild card.

Gonzalez previously coached FC Dallas from 2018-21 and served as an assistant to Gregg Berhalter with the U.S. men’s national team from 2021-22.
