The Columbus Crew and Eloy Room mutually agreed to terminate the goalkeeper’s contract on Monday.

Room, 34, played five seasons with the Crew and helped the club capture the 2020 MLS Cup. He is now a free agent.

“Since joining the Crew in the summer of 2019, Eloy has consistently been a great teammate and leader for our Club on the pitch and in the community,” Crew general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a team release. “Through open, respectful conversations, the Club and Eloy collectively determined it was best to allow him to become a free agent and explore opportunities to play more significant minutes elsewhere.”

Room has just three starts this season, with the Crew turning over primary duties to Patrick Schulte.

Room started all 96 matches he played in, recording 25 shutouts. Room was named the Crew’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
