MLB: Spring training roundup: Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer excels in spring debut

Max Scherzer fired four hitless innings and four relievers completed the 2-hit shutout as Toronto edged Philadelphia 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.

The 41-year-old Scherzer posted one strikeout and one walk in his spring-training debut. Chase Lee, Josh Fleming, Lazaro Estrada and Connor Seabold combined for five strikeouts and one walk.

Jonatan Clase drove in the lone run in the ninth with a fielder’s choice as the Phils could not complete the inning-ending double play.

Prized prospect Andrew Painter hurled three scoreless innings for the Phillies as he gave up one hit and one walk. Relievers Jose Alvarado and Jhoan Duran threw an inning apiece and each posted two strikeouts with one hit.

Astros 5, Marlins 4

Collin Price drove in Pascanel Ferreras with a single as Houston walked off Miami in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Walker Janek poked a 2-run homer for the Astros off Cade Gibson in the sixth while Joey Loperfido went 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Starter Jason Alexander allowed two hits and two walks over three scoreless innings.

Marlins starter Chris Paddack also tossed three scoreless innings as he fanned two and allowed two hits. Outfielders Matthew Etzel and Brendan Jones posted two hits apiece while Etzel drove in two runs.

Orioles (ss) 2, Braves 2

Baltimore rallied for two runs in the ninth as Jordan Sanchez stroked an RBI triple and 19-year-old Jaiden Lo Re provided an RBI single to forge a tie with Atlanta in Venice, Fla.

Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski cracked back-to-back solo homers in the sixth to give the Braves the lead. Starter Grant Holmes authored 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball with three strikeouts, three walks and two hits.

Cameron Weston struck out four and allowed just one hit and one walk over three innings of scoreless relief for the Orioles. Reed Trimble went 2-for-4 and led off the ninth-inning rally with a double.

Orioles (ss) 3, Twins 2

Heston Kjerstad cracked a two-run homer in the sixth to help Baltimore’s home squad claim a victory over Minnesota in Sarasota, Fla.

Orioles starter Cade Povich allowed one run and one hit to go with one strikeout and one walk in his 3 2/3-inning stint. Coby Mayo drove in the game-winning run with a seventh-inning double.

Twins starter Mick Abel gave up two singles over four scoreless innings as he posted two strikeouts. James Outman went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases while Brooks Lee added two hits.

Red Sox 2, Rays 0 (6 innings)

Johan Oviedo combined with three relievers to toss a three-hit shutout as Boston prevailed over Tampa Bay during a truncated game in Fort Myers, Fla.

Oviedo fanned four and scattered two hits over 3 1/3 innings. Relievers Wyatt Olds, Aroldis Chapman and Zack Kelly combined for one whiff and one hit allowed. Justin Gonzales knocked in Caleb Durbin for the game’s lone RBI.

Rays starter Ty Johnson gave up one run over 2 1/3 innings while amassing three strikeouts and two walks. Narciso Polanco poked a double for the game’s lone extra-base hit.

Pirates 5, Tigers 3

Tom Harrington fired four innings of scoreless relief to earn the save as Pittsburgh never trailed against Detroit in Lakeland, Fla.

Mitch Jebb cracked a triple and scored a run off the bench for the Pirates, who watched prized prospect Konnor Griffin go 1-for-4 with two strikeouts to boost his spring average to .200. Starter Hunter Barco allowed three runs and three hits over three innings.

Tigers starter Casey Mize gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) during his 3 1/3-inning stint. Austin Slater cracked a two-run double out of the leadoff spot while Kerry Carpenter notched a triple.

Mets 3, Cardinals 2

Wyatt Young’s RBI single with two outs in the eighth lifted New York to the victory over St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.

Kyle Leahy fired four perfect innings with five strikeouts for the Cardinals. Joshua Baez and Miguel Ugueto staked St. Louis to a 2-0 lead with solo homers while Alec Burleson went 3-for-3.

Mets starter Kodai Senga surrendered those homers as part of his 2 2/3-inning stint that included two strikeouts and one more hit allowed. Brett Baty went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Mike Tauchman contributed an RBI double.

Royals 6, Reds 2

Kansas City plated five runs in the sixth inning to create separation over Cincinnati in Surprise, Ariz.

Jonathan India led off the bottom of the first with his first spring homer for the Royals, who got three shutout innings from starter Kris Bubic before Helcris Olivarez recorded the win with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand had an RBI double for the Reds, who were 1-of-12 with runners in scoring position. Nick Lodolo scattered six hits and two walks across his three-inning start but allowed just one run thanks to four strikeouts.

Cubs 4, Athletics (ss) 3

Top 10 organizational prospect Pedro Ramirez homered and plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to help Chicago rally past the Athletics in Mesa, Ariz.

Ian Happ also hit his first spring homer for the Cubs, who overcame starter Shota Imanaga surrendering three runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Brian Serven delivered a go-ahead two-run homer in the Athletics’ three-run third inning, and Andy Ibanez finished with a team-high two hits. Mason Barnett walked three and allowed five hits in three innings, letting in two runs.

Guardians 7, Padres 1

Rhys Hoskins knocked in four of Cleveland’s six runs over the fourth and fifth innings to blow past San Diego in Goodyear, Ariz.

Hoskins homered and hit a two-run single in consecutive at-bats, Steven Kwan had a triple and Jose Ramirez finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Guardians starter Slade Cecconi tossed four frames, allowing one run to secure the win.

Starter Michael King took the loss for San Diego, giving up three runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. The Padres amassed 10 hits but plated just the one run on Bryce Johnson’s third-inning single.

Giants (ss) 7, Rangers 5

Osleivis Basabe’s go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning helped San Francisco’s home squad surge past Texas in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Jerar Encarnacion (3-for-3) and Willy Adames (1-for-3) each had a pair of RBIs on singles for the Giants. Carson Whisenhunt struck out five and allowed one hit over three scoreless innings, Will Bednar recorded the win with a scoreless eighth inning and R.J. Dabovich threw a scoreless ninth to register the save.

The Rangers scored all of their runs on homers, a two-run shot by Jake Burger and a go-ahead three-run bomb by Mark Canha. Jonathan Brand took the loss, allowing three runs in one inning.

Giants (ss) 7, Diamondbacks 4

Will Brennan and Jesus Rodriguez each knocked in two runs as the road San Francisco squad held off Arizona in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Rodriguez was 3-for-3 with two doubles, and leadoff hitter Jared Olivo (2-for-4) scored three runs for the Giants. JT Brubaker got the start and the win with three innings of one-hit, one-run ball.

Jose Fernandez homered and had an RBI double and Gabriel Moreno opened the scoring with a first-inning homer. Diamondbacks starter Kohl Drake took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings.

White Sox 5, Mariners 1

Andrew Benintendi and Dustin Harris broke the game open with two-run singles in the seventh and eighth innings as Chicago ran away late with a win over Seattle in Peoria, Ariz.

Dru Baker doubled and scored two runs for the White Sox, who saw seven pitchers combine to allow one run on seven hits, striking out nine. Davis Martin was the pitcher of record, allowing one hit and striking out four over three scoreless frames.

Brock Rodden brought home the Mariners’ only run on an eighth-inning groundout. Seattle left nine on base and was hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. Logan Gilbert started with four scoreless innings on the mound.

Brewers 7, Angels (ss) 1

Top Milwaukee prospect Jesus Made delivered two hits and three RBIs in a convincing win over Los Angeles in Tempe, Ariz.

Andrew Vaughn homered and Brewers No. 4 prospect Cooper Pratt added two hits, including an RBI single. Brandon Woodruff struck out three in two scoreless innings in his spring debut.

Zach Neto had the Angels’ only RBI on a double as Los Angeles left 14 on base, starting with the bases loaded in the first. Grayson Rodriguez, acquired in a trade last November with Baltimore, was tagged for four runs on three hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Angels (ss) 3, Athletics (ss) 0

Ryan Johnson set the tone with four scoreless innings as Los Angeles’ road squad blanked the Athletics in Las Vegas.

Oswald Peraza delivered a two-run double and Nick Madrigal was 2-for-4 with an RBI single. Five Angels pitchers combined to allow six hits and no walks, striking out eight.

Jacob Wilson’s double was the only extra-base hit for the Athletics. The organization’s No. 3 prospect, Gage Jump, took a tough-luck loss, allowing one run on one hit over 3 2/3 innings.

Nationals 3, Yankees 0

James Wood’s two-run fifth-inning triple created the cushion as Washington blanked New York in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Josiah Gray and Ken Waldichuk each tossed three scoreless frames and five Nationals pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Starter Will Warren was the losing pitcher after allowing one unearned run on an error by top Yankees prospect George Lombard Jr. over his four innings of work.

Rockies 6, Dodgers 4

Jake McCarthy and Brenton Doyle’s RBI singles kicked off a four-run fifth inning which allowed Colorado to blow past Los Angeles in Phoenix.

Hunter Goodman added two RBIs on a pair of sacrifice flies for the Rockies, who got a high-traffic save from Adam Laskey with six hits and five strikeouts scattered over three scoreless innings.

Andy Pages had an RBI double and Alex Call and Teoscar Hernandez each added an RBI single for the Dodgers, who got 12 hits from 12 different players. Veteran reliever Blake Treinen took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits over one-third of an inning.
