MLB: Report: Rays to announce new St. Pete stadium deal

The Tampa Bay Rays will reportedly announce a deal Tuesday for a new stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The 30,000-seat domed stadium will cost about $1.2 billion to build and will open in 2028, the Tampa Bay Times reported Monday.

The completion of the deal appears to end the speculation about the Rays relocating to another city. The team’s current 30-year lease at aging Tropicana Field, which opened in 1990, is set to expire in 2027.

The new ballpark will be located near the current Tropicana Field site and construction contributions will come from the team, the city of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, per the report.

Earlier this month, Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg told the Tampa Bay Times that the team would “pay for half or more” of the stadium project.

The Rays enter the week with a 92-59 record and have clinched a playoff berth for the fifth consecutive season.
