The Miami Marlins hired Peter Bendix to be the team’s head of baseball operations, ESPN reported Sunday, three weeks after general manager Kim Ng elected to depart the organization.
Bendix, 38, arrives after two seasons as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Rays. He was hired by the Rays as an intern in 2009 and advanced through the front office from vice president to VP of baseball development in 2020.
Ng became the first female general manager of a men’s team in major U.S. sports in November 2020. She saw the Marlins improve from 67 wins in 2021 to 69 in 2022 and then 84 with a playoff appearance this past season.
At issue between Ng and the Marlins, according to reports, was the club’s plan to create a head of baseball operations role that Ng would report to. The Marlins exercised their mutual option to retain Ng, but she declined hers.
Before her historic hire by the Marlins, Ng worked as an assistant director of baseball operations with the Chicago White Sox (1990-96) and as assistant GM with the New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-11). She was the senior vice president of baseball operations for Major League Baseball from 2011-20.
