The San Francisco Giants asked the Boston Red Sox for permission to interview Jason Varitek about their managerial vacancy, the New York Post reported Friday.

A long-time catcher with the Red Sox, Varitek has been a member of Boston skipper Alex Cora’s coaching staff since the 2021 season.

The Giants fired manager Gabe Kapler with three games remaining in the regular season. He compiled a 78-81 record in 2023 and was 295-248 in four seasons with San Francisco.

Interim manager Kai Correa finished out the season and reportedly already has interviewed for the job, along with Giants coaches Mark Hallberg and Alyssa Nakken.

It was not known whether Varitek has any interest in the Giants’ opening, or whether the team has already conducted an interview with him, per the report.

Varitek, 51, played his entire 15-year career with the Red Sox from 1997-2011. He made three All-Star teams and helped Boston win World Series titles in 2004 and 2007.
