The Washington National released third baseman/outfielder Nick Senzel on Friday, five days after designating him for assignment.

Senzel batted just .209 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 64 games with Washington after signing a one-year, $2 million deal as a free agent in the offseason.

Things off to a bad start immediately for Senzel as he fractured his right thumb prior to the season-opening game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Senzel sustained the injury while fielding grounders during batting practice. One grounder struck his right thumb and X-rays confirmed the break.

Senzel made his season debut on April 15 but never got untracked and slugged just .359.

Senzel spent his first five big league season with Cincinnati. He was the No. 2 selection in the 2016 draft by the Reds.

The 29-year-old has a .235 career average with 40 homers and 143 RBIs in 441 games.
