The slumping Brandon Nimmo laced the tie-breaking two-out RBI single in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon for the host New York Mets, who completed a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 7-4 win.

The Mets squandered a 3-0 lead before rallying back. They improve to 15-7 — tied for the third-best 22-game start in franchise history. The four-game sweep of the Cardinals was the first since 1986, when New York won its most recent championship.

The four-game losing streak ties a season-high for the Cardinals, who were outscored 19-9 by New York in the series.

Nimmo, mired in a 3-for-23 slump entering the contest, fell into a 1-2 hole against former teammate Phil Maton before he singled past diving shortstop Thomas Saggese to score Francisco Lindor from second.

The Mets added key insurance in the eighth, when Tyrone Taylor had an RBI bloop double before Juan Soto delivered a two-run double.

Soto finished with three RBIs, while Lindor was 3-for-5 with a leadoff homer. Pete Alonso had a run-scoring single in the fifth. Soto, Taylor and Luisangel Acuna had two hits apiece.

Jose Butto (2-0), the third of four Mets pitchers, gave up the game-tying two-run double to Saggese before getting four outs to earn the win. Ryne Stanek, pitching in a non-save situation, gave up an RBI single to Lars Nootbaar in the ninth inning.

Alec Burleson began the Cardinals’ comeback with an RBI groundout in the sixth. Willson Contreras had two hits.

JoJo Romero (1-2), the first Cardinals reliever, took the loss after recording one out and allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Mets starter Clay Holmes gave up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings — his longest start since a six-inning outing for the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 14, 2018. The Cardinals’ Sonny Gray allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out sux over six innings.
