Josh Naylor had three hits and two RBIs and drove in the tiebreaking run in the 11th inning when the Arizona Diamondbacks salvaged the final game of a three-game series with a 3-2 victory over the host Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Naylor singled off Jordan Wicks (0-1) with no outs in the 11th to drive in Geraldo Perdomo. Naylor moved up on a groundout and Alek Thomas’ single, but was thrown out attempting to steal home for the final out of the inning.
Diamondbacks right-hander Drey Jameson got Ian Happ to line out to Perdomo at shortstop with a runner on second for an unassisted double play in the last of the 11th. Jameson then retired Kyle Tucker on a flyout for his second career save.
Jameson made his first major league appearance since July 6, 2023, as he has been recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Michael Busch had an RBI single in the first inning for the Cubs, who did not have another hit until Jon Berti’s infield single with one out in the eighth. They finished with four hits.
Shelby Miller (2-0) gave up an unearned run in two innings for the win.
Each team scored once in the 10th. Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner missed a throw from Wicks on Jose Herrera’s sacrifice bunt to allow the Diamondbacks to take a 2-1 lead. Hoerner singled off Arizona second baseman Tim Tawa’s glove to drive in the tying run in the bottom half.
The Diamondbacks have won six of eight. Corbin Carroll’s 12-game hitting streak and 21-game on-base streak were broken as the leadoff man went 0-for-5.
The start of the game was delayed by 39 minutes because of inclement weather. A sudden rain shower in the bottom of the first caused another 59-minute delay.
Cubs starter Jameson Taillon gave up one run and three hits in five innings with six strikeouts and two walks.
Arizona starter Merrill Kelly gave up two singles and a walk in 5 2/3 innings before leaving with a cramp in his lower right leg after making a 1-0 pitch to Seiya Suzuki with two outs in the sixth inning. He struck out five and walked one.
Kelly retired 16 in a row after Michael Busch’s run-scoring single in the first inning, the first batter after the 59-minute weather delay.
Arizona tied it 1-1 in the fourth when Pavin Smith hit a ground-rule double into the left field corner and Naylor followed with a run-scoring single.
