The San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Brandon Crawford on the 10-day injured list Sunday with left knee inflammation.

To take Crawford’s place on the active roster, the Giants recalled outfielder/catcher Yermin Mercedes from Triple-A Sacramento.

Crawford, 35, has been dealing with nagging injuries all season, with multiple reports indicating that manager Gabe Kapler does not expect the veteran’s time away to last longer than the required 10 days. His IL move is retroactive to Saturday.

Crawford is batting .224 with a .663 OPS to go along with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 63 games this season. Over 12 major league seasons, all with the Giants, the three-time All-Star is batting .253 with a .725 OPS, 135 home runs and 684 RBIs.

Mercedes, 29, was selected off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on June 18. In 29 combined games at Triple-A this season, he was batting .233 with four home runs and 13 RBIs. In 69 career major league games, he is a .270 hitter with seven home runs and 37 RBIs.
