The Arizona Diamondbacks started the process of replacing their coaching staff, hiring Joe Mather as hitting coach on Friday to join manager Torey Lovullo.

Mather spent the past two seasons as the Cincinnati Reds’ assistant hitting coach and is extremely familiar to the Diamondbacks, having coached and managed in their minor league system from 2015-19.

Mather, 39, is a Phoenix resident who played in parts of four major league seasons, batting .219 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs in 229 games with the St. Louis Cardinals (2008, 2010), Atlanta Braves (2011) and Chicago Cubs (2012).

Mather replaces Darnell Coles, who was fired as Arizona’s hitting coach in June, with Rick Short and Drew Hedman promoted to interim hitting coaches. The Diamondbacks remain in search of a bench coach and pitching coach after Luis Urueta and Matt Herges were fired.
