Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte was removed from the Diamondbacks’ game at Washington in the top of the first inning Friday after straining his left hamstring while running out a double.
Following the Diamondbacks’ 6-4 win, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said, “We’re going to continue to evaluate him, most likely headed for the IL. We budget for these hard times.
“The timing of it isn’t ideal, but we have players that are ready to step in and hold down the fort until he gets back. And that’s basically what I’m going to say to him. But for right now, he’ll get the evaluation tomorrow.”
Marte doubled off the center field fence with one out but pulled up as he approached second base and was replaced by pinch runner Garrett Hampson.
Marte, who signed a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension Thursday, missed time last season with ankle and back injuries that limited him to 136 games, although he still finished third in NL MVP voting.
He missed time with hamstring injuries in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
Hampson remained in the game at second base.
In eight games this season, Marte is batting .346 with one RBI and six walks.
