Jake McCarthy rapped out three hits Sunday, including a two-run homer that capped a six-run second inning, as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks salvaged a split of their four-game series with the San Diego Padres, 9-3.

It was a reversal of form from the previous two games, when San Diego won by a combined 23-4. Arizona finished with 15 hits and did all its scoring in the first four innings. Kevin Newman also delivered three hits for the Diamondbacks.

Joc Pederson snapped a 1-1 tie in the second by grounding a two-run single to right against rookie Adam Mazur (0-1). Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a two-run double to left and McCarthy finished the outburst by lining his third homer of the year into the right field seats.

Mazur was roughed up in his second MLB start, allowing eight hits and eight runs in three-plus innings after limiting the Los Angeles Angels to a run and two hits on Tuesday night. Mazur walked three and struck out two.

Arizona took a 1-0 first-inning lead when Christian Walker laced an RBI single to left that scored Corbin Carroll. But San Diego equalized in its half of the first when Fernando Tatis Jr. cracked his 12th homer of the year to center field, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games.

The Padres chipped away at the Diamondbacks’ big lead for a couple of innings. Luis Campusano knocked in Donovan Solano with a single in the second and Jurickson Profar belted his 10th homer of the season in the third, making it 7-3.

But Arizona added a pair of runs in the fourth on Walker’s second RBI single and a run-scoring single from Eugenio Suarez. Carroll, Walker and Gurriel each finished the day with two hits.

Reliever Tommy Henry (2-2) got the win after allowing three hits and two runs over 2 1/3 innings with two walks and a strikeout. The Diamondbacks opted for a bullpen game, using opener Scott McGough for three batters and then employing six relievers.
