The Toronto Blue Jays outrighted right-handed reliever Yariel Rodriguez off their 40-man roster on Saturday.

He cleared outright waivers and will remain in Toronto’s organization.

It was a surprising move to a clear 40-man spot, given Rodriguez’s performance. He was a key member of the Blue Jays’ bullpen last season, posting a 3-2 record, a 3.08 ERA and a 1.151 WHIP in 73 innings over 66 games for the American League champions. He had two saves.

The 28-year-old has three years and $21.3 million left on his contract, per Spotrac. He is set to make $7 million next season. As a result, he could be a trade candidate this winter.
