The Los Angeles Angels, deciding to be buyers at the trade deadline, acquired starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and reliever Reynaldo Lopez in a trade with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

Chicago received two minor-leaguers in the exchange, left-handed pitcher Ky Bush and catcher Edgar Quero.

Giolito, a 29-year-old right-hander, is heading home to his native Southern California. He is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA through 21 starts this year.

After breaking into the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2016, he and Lopez, along with Dane Dunning, were dealt to the White Sox that December in exchange for Adam Eaton.

An All-Star in 2019, Giolito owns a 59-53 career mark with a 4.26 ERA in 168 games (166 starts). He threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 25, 2020.

Lopez, another 29-year-old right-hander, is 2-5 with a 4.29 ERA and four saves in 43 relief appearances this year. He has played the past seven seasons in Chicago after reaching the major leagues with the Nationals in 2017.

A starting pitcher for most of his first five big-league years, Lopez has a career 38-47 record with a 4.42 ERA in 216 games (97 starts).

Bush, a 23-year-old left-hander, is 1-4 with a 7.20 ERA in eight starts this year for the Angels’ rookie-level affiliate and Double-A Rocket City. He was a second-round draft pick in 2021 and was rated by MLB.com as the Angels’ third-best prospect.

Quero, 20, is hitting .245 with a .385 on-base percentage, a .332 slugging percentage, three homers and 35 RBIs for Rocket City, which plays in Madison, Ala.

Reports earlier Wednesday indicated that the Angels were no longer shopping two-way star Shohei Ohtani, instead looking to build around him and Mike Trout, who is expected back from the injured list next month.
