Hamilton Tiger-Cats general manager Ted Goveia has died following a battle with cancer.

The Tiger-Cats announced his passing on Friday morning, just hours before he was to be honored at his club’s game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in what had been billed as “Team Ted Night.”

“Ted was a highly respected leader, colleague, and friend whose passion and commitment for Canadian football left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to the game and to the Tiger-Cats family will never be forgotten,” the team said in a statement.

A three-time Grey Cup champion, Goveia was in his first season as Hamilton’s GM after spending 11 years with the Blue Bombers.

The East Division-leading Tiger-Cats (7-5) will look for their second straight win Friday when they host Winnipeg (6-6).
