Felix Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP Tour title Sunday, easily defeating top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-4, 6-2 at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
For the 21-year-old Canadian, it was his ninth career final. And from the outset, the third-seeded Auger-Aliassime took command when he broke Tsitsipas’ serve in the first game of the 78-minute match.
Auger-Aliassime served with authority throughout the match: seven aces, no double faults and no break points. He won 93 percent (26 of 28) of points on his first serve.
The win continues a good start to 2022 for Auger-Aliassime, who helped Canada win the ATP Cup in January and reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, where he fell to world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in five sets.
Dallas Open
One day after winning the longest tiebreaker in ATP Tour history, No. 2 seed Reilly Opelka needed to win two more to defeat fourth-seeded Jenson Brooksby in a battle of Americans and win the title in Dallas, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3).
In the first set, Opelka went ahead 6-2 in the tiebreaker but couldn’t put Brooksby away until his fourth set point. Brooksby kept fighting in the second set, staving off four break points during the 11th game to eventually go ahead 6-5 before Opelka tied it 6-6 and won the ensuing tiebreak.
Opelka had a 16-2 advantage in aces on his way to securing his third ATP Tour title.
On Saturday, Opelka posted a 24-22 tiebreaker victory in the second set to defeat John Isner in the semifinals, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (22).
Argentina Open
No. 1 seed Casper Ruud of Norway dropped the first set but battled back against home favorite and second-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, winning the final in Buenos Aires 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Schwartzman won the final eight points of the first set to grab the early advantage. It was the first set Ruud lost all tournament.
Schwartzman wound up saving 13 of 17 break points on the day, but Ruud smashed 10 aces and cruised to victory over the next two sets. It was Ruud’s first victory of the season after he won five titles in 2021.
