Unseeded Spaniard Jaume Munar and Brazilian Joao Fonseca prevailed in the Swiss Indoors Basel quarterfinals on a trying day for their Canadian opponents.

No. 5 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime trailed Munar 6-3 when he retired from Friday’s matchup ahead of the second set. Countryman Denis Shapovalov, the ninth seed, committed nine double faults and was broken five times before retiring in the deciding frame of Fonseca’s 3-6, 6-3, 4-1 victory.

Fonseca and Munar will clash in one semifinal, and the other pits Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina against Ugo Humbert of France. Davidovich Fokina steamrolled Casper Ruud in a first-set tiebreaker and advanced 7-6 (1) when the Norwegian was promptly forced to retire. Humbert’s 7-6 (0), 6-4 win over Reilly Opelka ended the American qualifier’s run.

Top seed Jannik Sinner never faced a break point en route to ousting Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik from the quarterfinals in Vienna, Austria.

The Italian World No. 2 beat Bublik 6-4, 6-4 to book a semifinal confrontation with Alex de Minaur, who knocked off Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 7-6 (4). de Minaur, the Australian No. 3 seed, struck 20 winners and recovered from wasting three match points in the second set to top Berrettini in the tiebreaker.

No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany progressed to the other semifinal when Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor withdrew with a back injury. Zverev will face fourth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, who defeated France’s Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4.
