ATP: ATP roundup: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina starts strong in Atlanta

Fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina delivered 30 winners on Monday while recording a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over France’s Arthur Cazaux in the opening round of the Atlanta Open.

Davidovich Fokina had an 11-8 edge in aces and saved all five break points he faced while advancing. Cazaux 16 unforced errors, two fewer than Davidovich Fokina, to go with 15 winners.

Belgium’s David Goffin moved on with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Denis Shapovalov of Canada, and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka notched a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Zachary Svajda.

Generali Open

Eighth-seeded Laslo Djere of Serbia defeated Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the opening round in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Djere had a 6-2 edge in aces and converted 3 of 4 break points. Djere next faces Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild, who was a 6-2, 7-6 (6) winner over Austria’s Joel Schwaerzler.

In other matches, Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4; India’s Sumit Nagal beat Slovakia’s Lukas Klein 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3); and Nicolas Moreno De Alboran knocked off Argentina’s Andrea Collarini 6-4, 6-4.

Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag

Flavio Cobolli had a 16-5 edge in winners while cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the first round in Umag.

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-seeded Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego won a wild third-set tiebreaker to post a 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (9) victory over Mili Poljicak of Croatia. Sonego saved two match points.

In other matches, Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic beat Austria’s Filip Misolic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin. Also, Matej Dodig of Croatia recovered for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Frenchman Enzo Couacaud and Marco Trungelliti beat Guido Andreozzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a battle of players from Argentina.
