San Diego Padres outfielder Matt Beaty, who was designated for assignment Saturday, declined an assignment to Triple-A El Paso and elected to become a free agent Wednesday.

Beaty, 29, was batting .093 in 20 games with the Padres this season, while batting .254 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 38 minor league games in the San Diego system.

Beaty was designated for assignment by the Dodgers this spring and traded to the Padres in March. In 240 games with Los Angeles over three seasons, he batted .262 with 18 home runs and 91 RBIs.

The Padres designated Beaty after catcher Austin Nola was reinstated from the paternity list over the weekend.
