The Chicago White Sox placed right-hander Michael Kopech on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday due to a left knee strain.

Kopech sustained the injury during Monday’s start against the Kansas City Royals. He faced four batters and threw 19 pitches before exiting. He didn’t retire anyone and was charged with four runs.

“The hard-headedness in me wants to stay out there as long as possible,” Kopech said after the 6-4 loss. “But I wasn’t doing us any favors.”

Kopech is 4-9 with a 3.58 ERA in 23 starts this season. The 26-year-old is 9-13 with a 3.66 ERA in 71 career appearances (31 starts) with the White Sox.

Chicago recalled left-hander Tanner Banks from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move.

Banks, 30, went 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA in 29 relief appearances for the White Sox earlier this season.
