Charlotte FC signed former Benfica midfielder Nuna Santos through 2024 with an option for 2025.

The 24-year-old Portuguese player will occupy an international roster slot with the MLS club.

“Nuno is an intelligent attacking midfielder who chose to join Charlotte FC over European interest because he believes in our project and how this league develops young talent,” Charlotte sporting director Zoran Krneta in a news release Thursday night. “He has already competed at a high level on some of the biggest stages in Portugal, European competitions and youth international football.

“Nuno comes to us at a good age and will be entering his prime, adding valuable attacking options to the team as we continue to strengthen our roster for 2022 and beyond.”

Santos tallied seven goals and five assists in 74 appearances in Portugal’s top flight. He had five goals and two assists in 31 matches on loan with Pacos de Ferreira in 2021-22.
