Alyssa Thomas scored a game-high 23 points Sunday and the Connecticut Sun allowed only 23 points after halftime as they rallied for a 74-72 overtime win over the Washington Mystics at Uncasville, Conn.

Thomas scored four of Connecticut’s eight points in the extra session, including two foul shots with 1:06 left that made it 73-70. Alysha Clark drew Washington within 73-72 on a driving layup with 10.6 seconds remaining, but DeWanna Bonner sank a free throw with 9.3 seconds left for a two-point lead.

The Mystics had two shots on their final possession, but Natasha Cloud’s driving layup was blocked by Brionna Jones and Myisha Hines-Allen’s fallaway 3-pointer was off the mark as time expired.

The Sun (14-7) also got 15 points from Courtney Williams, 14 from Natisha Hiedeman and 11 from Jonquel Jones.

Ariel Atkins had 18 points for Washington (13-10), while Clark and Shakira Austin each scored 13.

Neither team scored in regulation after Jonquel Jones’ short bank shot tied the game at 66 with 1:31 remaining. Both teams missed shots in the last 10 seconds that could have won the game.

Playing without Elena Delle Donne (rest), Washington still dominated the first half against an opponent that has been prone to slow starts of late. The Mystics established a 26-19 first-quarter lead as Atkins delivered a 12-point period.

Washington pushed the lead as high as 17 points on two occasions late in the second period, the last coming on Tianna Hawkins’ putback in the final minute for a 49-32 advantage. Even a late bucket by Thomas could only bring Connecticut within 49-34 at halftime.

The Sun finally made a move in the third quarter, tightening up their defense and cutting down on turnovers. Jonquel Jones and Thomas each converted on close shots in the final 90 seconds to bring them within 59-54 going to the fourth period.
