The Seattle Mariners activated right-hander Paul Sewald from the COVID-19 list prior to Wednesday’s game against the host Tampa Bay Rays.

Sewald last pitched for the Mariners on April 19 before testing positive for COVID-19 during a club outbreak that included manager Scott Servais, outfielder Mitch Haniger and catcher Luis Torrens, among others.

Sewald, who went on the injured list on April 20, threw a bullpen session on Tuesday prior to being activated one day later.

Sewald, 31, has appeared in four games this season, going 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA with no walks and three strikeouts.

Servais returned to his managing duties Tuesday, arriving at Tropicana Field about one hour prior to first pitch. Haniger, who went on the list April 16, is with the club but hasn’t been activated. Torrens was activated Monday.

To open a spot for Sewald, Seattle optioned right-hander Penn Murfee to Triple-A Tacoma. Murfee was recalled to replace Sewald on April 20 but didn’t get into a game.

Murfee, 27, is 2-0 with two saves and hasn’t allowed an earned run over eight innings at Tacoma.
