Several clubs are advocating for a shutdown of Europe’s Premier League for about a month in an effort to deal with the surge in COVID-19 cases, ESPN reported Thursday.

Nine matches have been called off this month due to COVID-19, including Manchester United’s game vs. Brighton on Saturday.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank, whose team has experienced several positive COVID tests, has called for this weekend’s games to be suspended.
“We think we should postpone the full round of Premier League games this weekend,” he said Thursday, according to ESPN. “COVID cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs; everyone is dealing with it and having problems.”
The Premier League, while realizing that COVID-19 outbreaks are affecting its teams, said it intends to continue its schedule when it can do so safely, ESPN reported, adding that the health and safety of its personnel remain the league’s top priority.
