Jared McCann scored the tiebreaking goal at 14:33 of the third period, and the Seattle Kraken overcame Alex Ovechkin’s first goal of the season to beat the host Washington Capitals 5-3 on Sunday.

Ryan Winterton and Frederick Gaudreau each had a goal and an assist, Kaapo Kakko and Jordan Eberle also scored, and Ben Meyers had two assists for the Kraken, who have won the first two games of their five-game trip. Goaltender Joey Daccord made a season-high 33 saves.

Jordan Kyrou and Boone Jenner also scored, and Logan Thompson stopped 22 of 27 shots for Washington, which lost for just the second time in its past 17 games at Capital One Arena dating to last season (13-2-2).

McCann took a stretch pass from Brandon Montour at the Washington blue line, cut across the slot to avoid a defender and fired a wrist shot from the inside edge of the left faceoff circle over Thompson’s glove and into the upper near corner of the net.

Winterton scored on a breakaway at 17:20 to cap the scoring.

The score was tied 2-2 after the first period.

Kakko opened the scoring at 6:06, converting from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

Kyrou tied it at 11:41 with a one-timer from just below the left faceoff dot after taking a cross-ice pass from Cole Hutson.

Ovechkin gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead at 16:47 with a snap shot from the low slot after Ilya Protas stole a Seattle pass from behind the net. It was Ovechkin’s first goal of the 2026-27 campaign and the 930th of his NHL career, extending his all-time record in his 22nd and final NHL season.

Eberle tied it at 19:49 after taking a cross-slot pass from Chandler Stephenson. Thompson stopped Eberle’s first two shots from just outside the left post, but the veteran buried his third attempt under the goalie.

Gaudreau scored at 13:24 of the second period to give Seattle a 3-2 lead. Gaudreau dumped the puck behind the Washington net, Meyers forced a turnover and Winterton tipped the puck to a wide-open Gaudreau, who slipped a backhand shot around Thompson.

Jenner tied it just 46 seconds into the third period after intercepting an errant clearing attempt by Seattle’s Ryker Evans at the blue line. Jenner drove toward the net and was stopped by Daccord on his first attempt from the slot but beat the goalie on the rebound.
