Mitch Marner scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 2:40 of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
With Scott Laughton in the penalty box for tripping Shea Theodore six seconds earlier, Marner snapped a wrist shot from the high slot past a screen by Mark Stone and beyond the glove of Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper for the game-winner and his second goal of the season. It was Marner’s eighth career overtime winner and his first with the Golden Knights.
Trevor Connelly scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner, while Stone had two assists for Vegas, which extended its winning streak to four games.
Carter Hart made 26 saves for the Golden Knights, who leapfrogged the Edmonton Oilers to move back into first place in the Pacific Division.
Artemi Panarin scored the lone goal for Los Angeles, which remains winless (0-2-2) under first-year head coach Peter Laviolette. The Kings also have opened a season with four consecutive losses for the first time in franchise history.
Kuemper, who led the league with 15 losses in games decided beyond regulation last season, finished with 30 saves.
Following a scoreless opening period, the teams exchanged goals in the second, which ended tied at 1 despite Vegas holding a commanding 14-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead at 2:37 on a power-play goal by Connelly, who one-timed a cross-crease pass from Stone inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
Los Angeles answered with a power-play goal by Panarin, who fired a shot from above the circles that sailed past a leaping screen by Alex Laferriere and caromed off the left post and in for his third goal.
The Kings, who set an NHL record last season with 33 of their 82 regular-season games reaching overtime, fell to 0-2 in games decided beyond regulation this season.
