Rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt gave up one hit in seven scoreless innings for his first major league victory and the Arizona Diamondbacks spoiled Casey Mize’s San Diego debut with a 10-4 victory over the Padres on Wednesday in Phoenix.
Bratt (1-1) struck out a career-high nine and walked three in his sixth and longest major league start.
Ty France had the Padres’ only hit off Bratt, a leadoff single in the second, and the visitors got only one runner as far as second against him. Bratt retired the last nine batters he faced and used 92 pitches.
Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the ninth with a 465-foot homer to break the shutout bid, and Gage Workman’s bases-loaded double drove in three off Kevin Ginkel.
Ildemaro Vargas knocked in four runs and Tim Tawa homered and drove in two runs for Arizona.
Tawa had three hits and scored two runs and Gabriel Moreno drove in two runs in his return from paternity leave for the Diamondbacks.
Mize (4-7), acquired from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline on Monday, gave up season highs of nine hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out one in his first outing since July 25. He was scratched from a start last weekend amid trade rumors.
Vargas had a two-run double to cap a six-run fourth and added a two-run triple in the eighth.
Ryan Waldschmidt had a season-high-tying three hits and Corbin Carroll and Tyler Locklear had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of eight and are 16-7 since July 9, tied with Atlanta for the best record in the National League over that span.
San Diego had won four of five and nine of 11.
Tawa homered in the third after Moreno’s sacrifice fly drove in Carroll as the D-backs took a 2-0 lead.
Tawa has hit three of his six homers this season against the Padres. He has five homers and 18 RBIs in 25 games since recalled from Triple-A Reno on July 5.
The D-backs peppered Mize in the fourth, when six straight reached base against him with one out. Locklear doubled and Waldschmidt, Lars Nootbaar, Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo followed with singles for a 4-0 lead.
Mize was replaced by Kyle Hart after walking Moreno with the bases loaded to force in another run. Tawa hit a sacrifice fly and Vargas delivered a two-run double to cap the inning.
