ATP: ATP roundup: American Tommy Paul wins Stockholm Open

Tommy Paul won his first career ATP Tour event on Saturday, defeating Denis Shapovalov of Canada 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at the Stockholm Open in Stockholm, Sweden.

The 24-year-old New Jersey native excelled on second serve points won, converting at 61 percent (23 of 38) compared to 41 percent for his opponent.

“I played some of my best tennis to beat Denis,” Paul said. “It’s the most fun I’ve had playing a tennis tournament. It means everything to win my first title. I’ve worked so hard to achieve this and I’d like to break into the Top 30 at some point.”

Shapovalov, who won his first career championship at this tournament in 2019, connected on 70 percent on first serves but was saddled with 28 unforced errors.

Spanish 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz defeated Sebastian Korda 4-3 (5), 4-2, 4-2 to win the title in Milan, Italy.

Alcaraz needed just 84 minutes for the win.

“It is amazing,” Alcaraz said. “To be able to win this tournament means a lot to me. I am so excited right now and emotional. I was very, very nervous at the start. I had to be calm to save the break points. I know Korda is serving very well, so I had to play my best in those moments.”

Alcaraz fired 15 winners.
