Clara Tauson needed less than two hours to record the biggest upset of first-round play at the Bad Homburg Open on Monday in Bad Homburg, Germany.
The 25th-ranked Tauson, who hails from Denmark, defeated Russian seventh seed Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes, converting four of 10 break points and scoring six aces to Shnaider’s two. The victory snapped a seven-match losing streak for Tauson, whose last victory came in March at the BNP Paribas Open.
Shnaider, who won the Bad Homburg title in 2024, has lost back-to-back first-round matches on grass after Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic knocked her out of the Berlin Tennis Open.
An ankle injury forced Iva Jovic to withdraw from her scheduled match against China’s Xinyu Wang. Mexico’s Renata Zarazua took Jovic’s spot in the match, which Wang won 6-1, 6-2.
Japanese sixth seed Naomi Osaka rolled past Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-1 in a match that was suspended on Sunday because of rain. Osaka, winner of four Grand Slam titles, won 60% (21 of 35) of her second-serve points to Frech’s 21.4% (6 of 28).
Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya, China’s Qinwen Zheng, Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu and Belgium’s Elise Mertens also advanced Monday.
Lexus Eastbourne Open
Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic shook up first-round play with her 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 win over eighth-seeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club.
Tomljanovic had a big advantage on her first-serve points — winning 72.1% (44 of 61) to Cocciaretto’s 58.5% (31 of 53) in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes, despite Tomljanovic needing just 36 minutes to take the first set.
Colombia’s Emiliana Arango took advantage of a last-minute opportunity when she filled in for Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, who withdrew with an injury. Arango, ranked No. 101, defeated Australia’s Maya Joint 7-6 (2), 6-4.
No. 3 seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, No. 7 seed McCartney Kessler, Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina, the Czech Republic’s Tereza Valentova and Croatia’s Petra Marcinko also recorded first-round victories.
