WTA: Ekaterina Alexandrova upset in first round at Linz

Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine downed Russian No. 5 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (2) on Monday in the opening round of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in Linz, Austria.

Tsurenko converted five of 10 break point opportunities. In the second-set tiebreaker, Alexandrova went ahead 2-0 before Tsurenko ripped off seven straight points to run away with the result.

In the longest match of the day, Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian rallied from a set down to beat Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. China’s Xinyu Wang also used three sets to win her match over Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Wang will face No. 1 seed Emma Raducanu of Great Britain in the next round. The top four seeds, including Raducanu, received a bye into the Round of 16.

Other winners Monday included Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine, Rebecca Peterson of Sweden, Alize Cornet of France and Belgium’s Greet Minnen and Alison Van Uytvanck.
