Safety Tyrann Mathieu came to the defense of teammate Anthony Hitchens on social media, and levied a shot at the Kansas City Chiefs’ fan base in the process.

The Chiefs posted a 38-10 record over the three previous seasons (2018-20) before limping to a 3-4 mark in 2021. The fans’ frustration appears to be escalating, however, with some providing pointed answers to a question posed on a Chiefs-focused Instagram account on Friday.

Arrowhead.nation followers were asked to rank recent moves by general manager Brett Veach in relation to how bad they were: Signing edge rusher Frank Clark to a five-year, $105 million contract; signing Hitchens to a five-year, $45 million contract; or passing on Jonathan Taylor, D’Andre Swift, Cam Akers, J.K. Dobbins and Antonio Gibson to select Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Hitchens elected to chime in on the comments section.

“All we did was go to 3 AFC championship games and 2 Super Bowls and 1 SB win in my first 3 years here so far,” Hitchens wrote. “y’all fans will never be satisfied it’s sad!”

Mathieu added his support to both his teammates and Veach.

“Big facts. This might be one of the most toxic fan bases in all of sports,” Mathieu said.

Kansas City hosts the New York Giants (2-5) on Monday night.
