Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook slammed skates-first into the boards and was helped off the ice Thursday night against the visiting Dallas Stars.

The puck went behind the goal line as Newhook and Ilya Lyubushkin raced toward it. Replays showed the Stars defenseman clipped Newhook’s skates, forcing him to the ice with 15:50 left in the second period. Lyubushkin received a hooking minor.

Newhook, 24, was helped to the bench by teammates.

A center, Newhook ranks fifth in scoring on the Canadiens with 12 points (six goals, six assists). He entered Thursday with points in three of his last five games.
