The National Women’s Soccer League is retaining commissioner Jessica Berman, giving her a three-year contract extension through the 2028 season, multiple outlets reported.

The league has not confirmed the extension, which was approved this week by a four-person executive committee rather the full board, Sportico reported.

Berman has been in the role since her hiring in April 2022 at a time when the league was facing accusations of sexual misconduct and abuse by players from multiple teams.

She implemented a system that included players having a say in hiring, was a guiding force in developing a a player-friendly collective bargaining agreement and also is overseeing both club expansion as the league continues to grow in popularity.

In Berman’s time as commissioner, the NWSL has finalized a $240 million media rights contract and seen team valuations rise to more than $250 million from less than $10 million.

She has been criticized for some specific incidents, however, which include not mandating a match be stopped when Angel City FC defender Savy King collapsed on the field due to a heart issue.

Berman previously worked with the NHL and also the National Lacrosse League, where she was the deputy commissioner and executive vice president of business affairs before accepting the NWSL job.
