D.C. United will target their second victory over the New York Red Bulls this season when the teams meet on Saturday night in Washington.

Joao Peglow scored both of his team’s goals in D.C. United’s 2-1 victory over the Red Bulls on April 19 in Harrison, N.J.

Unfortunately for D.C. United (3-6-5, 14 points), they lost 2024 MLS Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke to injury just 29 minutes into that clash. Benteke, who has returned to action but is nursing an ankle injury, has a team-leading six goals to go along with one assist this season.

D.C. United and the Red Bulls (5-6-3, 18 points) are both entering this weekend’s clash off penalty shootout wins in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

D.C. United and Charlotte FC played to a 3-3 draw on Wednesday before D.C. prevailed 2-1 on penalty kicks.

Third-string goalkeeper Jordan Farr was a substitute and paid dividends in the shootout, stopping four of five attempts.

“We knew going into this, if we went to penalties and we had a substitution left, we wanted him to be in that situation,” D.C. United coach Troy Lesesne said, per the Washington Post. “It’s an unbelievable performance. To save four out of five is truly special.”

The Red Bulls followed back-to-back losses in MLS play with a victory on penalty kicks over FC Dallas on Wednesday in U.S. Open Cup play.

The match versus FC Dallas was knotted at 2-2 before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Noah Eile, Daniel Edelman and Emil Forsberg all converted their attempts to give New York a 4-3 win on PKs. AJ Marcucci made it stand up by denying Pedrinho to seal the win.

“For us, it was a grind, for sure,” Marcucci told CBS Sports. “… It just showed what we can do, our resilience and everything. And at the end of the day, the most important part was winning.”

Speaking of Choupo-Moting, he scored in the first encounter versus D.C. United and has a team-leading seven goals on the season

The Red Bulls, however, still are in search of their first road win of the season. They are 0-5-2 away from home.
