Randy Vasquez threw five quality innings and Xander Bogaerts went 3-for-5 and scored twice as the visiting San Diego Padres posted a 2-1 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday afternoon in West Sacramento, Calif.

Vasquez (1-1) allowed just one run on one hit while striking out a batter and walking three. Oscar Gonzalez tallied a pair of hits, including an RBI single, while Manny Machado and Jason Heyward also recorded two-hit performances as San Diego won its third game in four tries and took two of three against the Athletics.

Osvaldo Bido (1-1) went five innings, giving up two runs on nine hits for the A’s while striking out five and walking none. Brent Rooker and Jacob Wilson were responsible for the Athletics’ only two hits as the club dropped its third of four games.

Vasquez issued consecutive walks to Shea Langeliers and JJ Bleday to begin the bottom of the second, and Wilson’s one-out single loaded the bases. Luis Urias then drove in the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly to score Langeliers. Vasquez escaped further damage by getting Max Muncy to pop out to first.

In the top of the third, Bogaerts and Machado’s one-out singles were followed by Gavin Sheets’ strikeout. Gonzalez then tied the game with an RBI single to center; a diving Bleday couldn’t hold on to the ball.

After Bogaerts began the top of the fifth with a double, he advanced to third on Machado’s flyout, then scored on Sheets’ sacrifice fly to center, giving the Padres a 2-1 edge.

Angel Perdomo relieved Bido in the sixth, working around Heyward’s leadoff single to throw a scoreless inning. Vasquez was also replaced in the sixth, with Adrian Morejon working a scoreless frame for San Diego.

Jeremiah Estrada and Jason Adam pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively, for the Padres, while Noah Murdock threw two innings, before Justin Sterner and T.J. McFarland combined to pitch the ninth for the Athletics.

San Diego closer Robert Suarez walked Tyler Soderstrom to begin the ninth, but got Langeliers to ground into a double play and Bleday to fly out to earn his sixth save in as many tries.
