WTA: WTA roundup: Rebecca Sramkova pulls off upset at Budapest

Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova won a first-set tiebreaker and went on the 7-6 (4), 6-3 upset of No. 3 seed Xiyu Wang of China on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hungarian Grand Prix at Budapest.

Sramkova saved 10 of 12 break points in the victory, while converting four of 10.

Top-seeded Diana Shnaider of Russia moved on to the quarterfinals with ease after a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Shnaider next will face Ella Seidel of Germany, who earned a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Hungary’s Anna Bondar.

Germany’s Eva Lys also advanced, leading 7-6 (6), 4-1 when Bernarda Pera retired with an injury. Lys will face Sramkova in the quarterfinals.

Palermo Ladies Open

No. 7 seed Jaqueline Cristian of Romania converted six of 10 break-point chances and advanced to the quarterfinals in Italy with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Italian Lucia Bronzetti.

France’s Chloe Paquet also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle and will face fellow Frenchwoman Diane Parry in the quarterfinals.

Ann Li of the United States earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Erika Andreeva of Russia and will face Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania in the quarterfinals.

In the final match of the day, No. 1 seed Qinwen Zheng of China got past Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4, 6-4. Zheng will meet Cristian in the quarterfinals.
