MLB: Cardinals rally from five-run deficit, edge Nationals in 11th

Masyn Winn scored on a passed ball in the 11th inning and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Washington Nationals 7-6 on Friday night.

Automatic runner Winn went to third on a groundout and scored on a swinging strike three passed ball by catcher Riley Adams with Wilson Contreras at the plate.

Ryan Helsley (3-3) pitched two innings for the win. Dylan Floro (3-2) took the loss.

Nolan Arenado had four hits for the Cardinals, who have won four of five.

Luis Garcia Jr. had four hits, including a homer, for Washington.

Nolan Gorman had an RBI single for the Cardinals in the top of the 10th and Keibert Ruiz answered with an RBI single for Washington in the bottom half.

Contreras homered off Washington closer Kyle Finnegan with one out in the ninth to tie it.

Lane Thomas singled with one out in the Washington first. He stole second and scored on a two-out double by Jesse Winker. After Ruiz walked, Garcia singled, scoring Winker to make it 2-0.

Juan Yepez, called up from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, led off the second with a single. After Nick Senzel grounded into a forceout, Jacob Young singled. CJ Abrams doubled to right, scoring Senzel and Young to increase the lead to 4-0.

Garcia made it 5-0 when he homered in the third.

Paul Goldschmidt and Arenado singled with one out in the fourth and Brendan Donovan walked to load the bases. Goldschmidt scored when Dylan Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to right. Arenado moved to third on the out and scored on an infield single by Pedro Pages.

Winn doubled leading off the St. Louis fifth and scored on a Contreras single to cut the Nationals’ lead to 5-3.

Arenado doubled leading off the eighth, went to third on a groundout and scored on a bloop single by pinch hitter Gorman to make it 5-4.

St. Louis starter Sonny Gray allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings.

Washington’s Patrick Corbin went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and left in line for his first win since May 10.
