ATP: ATP roundup: Zhizhen Zhang scores upset in Halle

Zhizhen Zhang eliminated third-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday to become the first Chinese player to reach the Terra Wortmann Open quarterfinals in Halle, Germany.

Zhang overcame a 5-3 deficit in the third-set tiebreak by winning four consecutive points to upset Medvedev in just over two hours. Zhang’s next opponent will be Christopher Eubanks, who knocked out No. 7 seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3.

No. 2 Alexander Zverev of Germany posted a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Also advancing were Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and France’s Arthur Fils.

Fourth-seeded Taylor Fritz advanced to the Queen’s Club quarterfinals with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win against Canada’s Milos Raonic in London.

Fellow American Sebastian Korda moved on, knocking out 2014 tournament champ Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Australians Rinky Hijikata and Jordan Thompson also moved into the final eight. Hijikata edged Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 7-6 (0), 7-6 (7) and Thompson was leading 4-1 when five-time tournament champion Andy Murray of Great Britain had to retire with a back injury.
