MLB: Cardinals halt seven-game skid, beat Brewers

Michael Siani doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh and struggling Paul Goldschmidt added a home run and RBI single as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Miles Mikolas (3-5) settled in after allowing three runs in a 42-pitch first inning, finishing with five scoreless innings. He allowed six hits, striking out three and walking three — needing just 53 pitches the rest of the way.

Ivan Herrera singled to open the seventh against reliever Elvis Peguero (4-1). With two outs, Siani ripped a run-scoring drive off the top of the wall in center, although Siani was thrown out trying for a triple.

JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge combined for two scoreless innings and Ryan Helsley finished with a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances.

St. Louis had lost eight straight vs. the Brewers and 11 of the last 12 meetings.

Siani singled to open the sixth, stole second and took third on Lars Nootbaar’s two-out single. Goldschmidt followed with a single to left to tie it 3-3.

Goldschmidt, who snapped a career-worst 0-for-32 slump Saturday night with a ninth-inning single, opened the fifth with his third homer to pull the Cards within 3-2. It was his first home run since April 22 vs. Arizona.

Milwaukee scored three in the first, but missed an opportunity to add on.

William Contreras singled with one out, extending his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games. Christian Yelich walked and Willy Adames reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

Rhys Hoskins drew an eight-pitch walk to force in the first run. Joey Ortiz followed with an RBI groundout. Gary Sanchez delivered a run-scoring single to left, but Hoskins was thrown out at home to end the inning.

St. Louis got a run back in the second when Nootbaar drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso both were ejected in the top of the third.
