The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Carson Coleman on the 60-day injured list on Saturday as the pitcher continues his recovery following his April 2023 Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

In a corresponding move on the 40-man roster, the Rangers claimed shortstop and outfielder Jose Barreo off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

Barrero, who will be 26 on April 5, has played his entire 139-game major league career with Cincinnati (2020-23) and is out of minor league options. Once the Reds’ No. 1 prospect, he batted .218 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 133 at-bats over 46 games last season.

Coleman, 25, has been a career minor leaguer who was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 33rd round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Kentucky.

He was a highly regarded prospect in the New York Yankees organization before the elbow injury. The Yankees didn’t include him on their 40-man roster before the MLB Rule 5 draft last December, and the Rangers selected Coleman off New York’s Double-A affiliate.

Coleman must spend a minimum of 90 days on the Rangers’ active roster or fall into roster restrictions for the 2024 season.
